The Treasurer asked the ERA to monitor and report on the prices of beverages affected by the Container Deposit Scheme.

The Container Deposit Scheme allows consumers to take empty beverage containers to a refund point to receive a refund of 10 cents.

The scheme is being implemented by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. Further information about the scheme can be found on the department’s website.

The scheme commenced on 1 October 2020. The ERA released a draft report about the effect of the scheme on prices over the first six months on 26 July 2021. The ERA provided a final report to the Treasurer, including recommendations, on 11 February 2022. The Treasurer tabled this report in Parliament on 24 February 2022.

The ERA appointed the Goomalling Community Resource Centre to coordinate collection of data in regional and remote Western Australia, and will commence collecting data in metropolitan areas in due course.
