Limit Advice and Constraint Equations Review

Review of Limit Advice and Constraint Equations

From 1 October 2023, the WEM has moved to a constrained access model. Network limits respect the physical capabilities of the network elements to transfer electricity. Constraint equations are mathematical representations of network (and other) limits and are used in the dispatch process. The ERA undertakes a review into the effectiveness of Limit Advice provided by each Network Operator to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), and the Constraint Equations formulated by AEMO in meeting the State Electricity Objective and good electricity industry practice. The ERA must complete its first review by 30 September 2025 (two years after commencement of the new WEM), and afterwards every three years.

2025 Review

The ERA published its draft report on 31 July 2025. The consultation period closes at 4PM on Friday, 22 August 2025. The ERA’s draft report is accompanied by two consultant’s reports. The ERA will publish all stakeholder submissions. After considering stakeholder feedback, the ERA will publish its final report on 30 September 2025.
